That was in the 60s. Not sure how that fits the narrative here about his residence but he lived a few houses away and I would visit him in his back yard which was wall to wall Croton of every variety. A really nice man!Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07936167976352474909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4534354996846146951.post-89257892838844648422019-08-10T15:53:19.602-04:002019-08-10T15:53:19.602-04:00Dr. Brown was both a former neighbor when I was in...Dr. Brown was both a former neighbor when I was in fifth grade and my Principal at Melbourne High School. I was fortunate to be at MHS during the time when we had non-grade level classes. We also had Chinese, advanced Chenistry, Anatomy. There were several of my classmates who won National Science Fair awards and were able to take some Independant classes. Dr. Brown was extremely interested in advancing the education of MHS students. While other schools were having week Pep Rallies, we had one. And Brevard County was growing so rapidly that our small auditorium could only hold 1/3 of the students at a time. Thus, we did not have assemblies. Dr. Brown had a great sense of humor and always wore a bow tie. The last time I saw him was 8/2/08. My husband and I visited his gardens. He remember me and came out to visit. We had a nice time reminishing. I feel fortunate to have known him. The memory I speak of comes by way of the fact that my time there was during the height of the space race taking place at what was then Cape Canaveeral.

We knew that a very important rocket launch was upcoming on a day in February day in 1962. On February 20 confirmation was made that it would take place in the daytime. But, no word was given that we could see it and, yet, we had regularly seen such launchings both at night and during the day, while at home or elsewhere. The assumption we had as students is that we would miss seeing John Glenn get sent into orbit, the first American to do so. And then, the fire alarms went off - and we all marched outside, and saw the Atlas 6 contrail into the sky.

One of the luckiest aspects of my life is that I was a student when Frank Brown was my Principal.

Mike Benson

Michel Bensonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16386903691902503756noreply@blogger.com
