The answer is "yes." As a matter of fact, the answer is yes, "twice." Following a wreck on the Central of Georgia Railroad between Wadley and Davisboro, the conductor of the train took the grand lady through Dublin on the morning of May 3, 1961. The Dublin Courier Herald reported, "Communities west of here got wind of the approach of the iron maiden and school children and others of the populace gathered to see her speed through." Exactly two weeks later, the sleek Central Georgia train came to Dublin again. This time the Nancy Hanks dropped off one special passenger. He was B.J. Tarbutton, a director of the railroad, who was headed to the depot in Tennille in his home county of Washington. It was the first and only time in the history of the ancient railroad line that a passenger was delivered to Dublin. Courier Herald, May 3,17, 1961.

Riding the Nancy Hanks from Macon to Atlanta and a day of shopping at the iconic and luxurious Rich's Department Store became a tradition for Dublin women in the 1950s and 1960s. The Dublin Service League sponsored a trip for the ladies of Dublin in 1950. Some people took their own cars. Other rode on a chartered bus to the railroad station in Macon. Before, the those wishing to shop at Rich's simply took an MDS Railroad train to Macon and switched to the Central of Georgia in Macon. That practice ended on December 31, 1949, when the last direct passenger train to Macon ended.

Scott B. His father, Brent Honeywell, Sr., coached his son well. His mother, Sabrina White, formerly Sabrina Cantera, of Dublin, was in the stands cheering her talented son on. Honeywell pitched two shut-out innings in the All-Star Futures Game on July 9, 2017. Brent k-od four batters, allowing a single hit for the USA team. His effective relief pitching earned Brent the Most Valuable Player award for the game. His game hat was taken by the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York as a part of the museum’s vast collection of baseball memorabilia. Honeywell told a reporter, “It really threw me off guard because they told me it’s going to be sitting in Cooperstown,” Honeywell said. “I thought that was pretty cool. It’s actually awesome. This was definitely been one of the best days of my life." Honeywell suffered many injuries during his minor-league career. In his first game in the majors in 2023, Honeywell helped to defeat his childhood favorite team, the Atlanta Braves. Ordinarily, today is not a busy news day. After all, it only comes once every four years.

During the lunch hour on Leap Day, in 1940, many Dubliners were startled by what they saw in a local restaurant. Robert Pershing Wardlow stopped to grab a bite to eat on his way through Dublin. He wasn't your average man. Robert Wardlow was twenty-two years old, but he was big for his age - eight feet eleven inches tall and growing. He was the world's tallest man and weighed 439 pounds. Shortly after his visit to Dublin, Robert Wardlaw died on June 27, 1940.

The news of the wounding of Marine James W. Bedingfield in the South Pacific dominated the news on Leap Day, 1944. Bedingfield would later win the Silver Star for gallantry in action.

Leap Day in 1948 was an unusual one for churchgoers - a fifth Sunday in February. Dr. John Taylor, a leader of the Baptist Home Missionary movement, spoke to a large congregation at Jefferson Street Baptist Church. Basketball fans of Toombs High and Wadley High were still reeling from the clock foul up in the final seconds of the championship game of the Class C, 6th District Tournament held at Condor Gym.

On Leap Day 1952, the United States was again at war. This time it was in Korea. The Cedar Grove girl’s basketball team suffered a one-point loss to Hiram in the Class C playoffs. Earl Braswell of the Rentz F.F.A. spoke to the Dublin Lions Club, while Cordie Joiner was chosen as one of five Georgia students in an international farm exchange. The Red Hill Woodmen of the World Camp presented a stage curtain to Lowery High School. Kidd Pierce and Will Gordon had their 809-gallon still seized and destroyed. Mrs. Nina Fuller led the kickoff of the annual Red Cross Drive.

The Leap Day of 1956 was fairly quiet. Churchwell’s Department Store was selling boys’ jeans for a dollar per pair. Robert E. Clark, Jr., the new manager of the Dublin minor league baseball team, spoke to a baseball booster group headed by Bush Perry, at the Shamrock Hotel. Winn Dixie was selling coffee for 69 cents a pound, while Table Supply was selling a six-pack of Cokes for 19 cents, ham for 39 cents a pound, and steak for 69 cents a pound. Tommy Savage, Dick Edenfield, Charles Garrett, and James Hudson organized a six-team business sandlot baseball league.

The Dexter girl’s basketball team was preparing for the state championship on Leap Day, 1960 with a victory over Wheeler County. The Dublin Mill of J.P. Stevens was awarded a safety award for 464,901 man-hours without an accident. Sen. Herman Talmadge and Cong. Carl Vinson announced the award of Federal funds for urban renewal projects in Dublin. Livestock prices were strong at the Jepeway-Craig weekly livestock sale. Kay Hogan of Dexter won the Betty Crocker Award for homemaking.

City workers were still repairing the streets of Dublin on Leap Day, 1964 after the devastating ice storm of New Year’s Eve. Tommy Patterson, manager of Dublin Garment Co., announced a two hundred-thousand-dollar plant expansion. The Dexter girl’s basketball team celebrated their capture of the Region 5-C title. Tri-County Gas, formerly known as Perkins Gas Co., celebrated its grand opening. Colonial Grocery was selling whole fryers for 25 cents a pound, cornflakes for 15 cents a box, and lemons for 29 cents a dozen.

On Leap Day, 1968, the United States was again at war - this time in Vietnam. Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Pharis and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Passmore were beaming over the birth of their leap-day babies.

Dublin and Laurens County joined together in announcing the establishment of a joint landfill authority on Leap Day, 1972. Cattle prices hit new highs. The St. Patrick’s committee held an organizational meeting. Ellen Weaver was awarded the 4H Club Key Award for her outstanding work in that organization. At the Martin Theatre, many people watched the cult classic movie, “Billy Jack.” An X-rated movie was shown at the East Dublin Drive-In, and a not-so-classic western, “Boot Hill” was playing at the Village Theatre.

The month of February 1976 once again had five Sundays. Three hundred kids walked for ten cents a mile to raise funds for Bruce Howell, an East Dublin youth who was a victim of cancer, and Ricky Evans, a former resident of Laurens County who was injured in a car accident. Milk had risen to $1.18/gallon at Winn Dixie. Eggs were sixty-six cents a dozen.

The Leap Day 1980 issue of the “Courier Herald” ran a human interest story on Stephanie Tarpley, one of Dublin High School’s most loyal fans ever. Robert Martin was awarded a football scholarship to Taft College. Local Civil Defense officials were conducting drills in preparation for the upcoming tornado season.

The editorial of the “Courier Herald” called for the construction of the Highway 441 by-pass on February 29, 1988. Twelve years later the state hasn’t even started the work. On Leap Day, 1992 the Black History Festival gave out its annual awards to outstanding citizens. On February 29, 1996, Dublin was added to the list of cities through which the Olympic torch would pass. The torch passed through Dublin three times - the final two coming along Industrial Blvd. and Highway 441 South. The torch also passed through Laurens County three times - the final two coming when the torch was carried along Highway 46 between Eastman and Soperton. Dublin and Laurens County may have been the only city and county through which the torch passed three times.

What will be the news for Leap Day 2024? As they say in the newspaper business, read the next edition of this paper and find out what happened or go out and make some “good” history on your own today.

Scott B. One hundred and forty years ago this week, Andrew Lamb found himself in the midst of one of the greatest battles in the history of naval warfare. Andrew Lamb began the study of medicine in 1857 and graduated from Georgia Medical College in 1860. On April 14, 1861, two days after the first shot of the war was fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, Dr. Lamb enlisted in the Fourth Georgia Infantry, Co. C, Twiggs Volunteers. Shot after shot bounced off the iron hulls of the two combatants for nearly two hours. The Virginia ran aground on a sand bar and took a pounding. The Virginia’s situation soon became critical. Her unprotected deck was awash due to the consumption of most of the ship’s coal in the last two days. The armor along the sides of the ship extended only three feet below the deck and put the ship in danger as it began to rise above the water line. The crew fired the engine to its maximum tolerance. More combustible materials were thrown into the boiler. All too slowly and just about when the boilers were about to explode, the propellers spinning at warp speed pushed the ship out of the mud and into the main channel of the river. Depending on the abundance of rain, crossing the streets would have been an arduous and dirty task. In the winter of 1906, the City of Dublin ordered four granite, three-foot-wide crosswalks to be laid. The first to be laid was between the C.W. Brantley Building (The Exchange 2020) and the First National Bank (Miller & Co. 2020). Afterward, crosswalks were laid from the Henry Building to the Courthouse Square, then from the east side of the Courthouse Square across Franklin Street. After all, we named it after him. What many don’t know is that Carnegie made another smaller, yet long-lasting contribution to the city. Based on correspondence between First Methodist Church organist, Mrs. J.A. Peacock, with Andrew Carnegie, the church moved forward and purchased a grand pipe organ from Pilcher & Sons in Louisville, Kentucky through the Atlantic Music House of Dublin. Once the organ was installed, Carnagie, as he promised, sent a check for half of the $1500.00 cost. The new organ and all of its pipes were originally placed in the left rear corner of the church before they were covered by dark wooden paneling. Mrs. Peacock’s dream came true on Sunday morning, April 22, 1906, when she played the most beautiful church music ever heard in Dublin. Marty Wilkins was working as a manager of the Flash Foods store on Glenwood Road. Marty was a graduate of Dublin High School. According to his store manager Sheila Hall, “he loved his job and was real friendly.” Mrs. Hall had talked with Wilkins as he was counting the money in the register drawer just before 7:00 a.m. on the morning of October 20, 1979. Within the next hour, Wilkins was found shot to death with a high-powered rifle in the cooler of the store. The cash was missing. Marty Wilkins was only 24 years old and a father of one boy. The identity of Wilkins’ killer remained a mystery for about six years. In the spring of 1985, Henry Lee Lucas, one of America’s most infamous serial killers, was being transported from South Carolina back to prison in Texas. As the car approached the Glenwood Road, Lucas told the driver to exit from the interstate highway. He directed the officers to the Flash Food Store. He told the officers that on October 20, 1979, he murdered a store clerk and put his body in the cooler. Lucas divulged other information which was never given to the public. Dublin Police Chief Wayne Fuqua was informed of Lucas’ statement. Chief Fuqua sought and was granted a warrant by Deputy Magistrate Scott Thompson. The mystery of the murder of Marty Wilkins was solved. Williams was born in Petersburg, Virginia in 1793. Williams came to Georgia before the age of twenty. Williams represented Baldwin County in the legislature for many years. Williams had a pension for acquiring land. Williams began buying an enormous amount of lapsed land grants and other granted lands that were unwanted by disappointed landowners. Williams accumulated nearly 80,000 acres of land in southern Laurens County - an era which equals 125 square miles. Williams’ land holdings represented fifteen percent of the area of Laurens County. Williams sold the lands and other lands to the south in Telfair and Pulaski Counties to Stephen Chase, Abram Colby, and Samuel Crocker on February 28, 1834. The lands sold for less than a quarter an acre. At the time they were considered worthless. A series of northern investors owned the lands for decades. Eventually, the lands were acquired by the Dodge family which harvested the virgin pine trees, shipping the lumber to ports throughout the northeast and Europe.
