The Dublin Guards, the county's first organized militia after the Civil War, were organized in 1891. Commanded by Capt. Lucien Quincy Stubbs, a future and extremely popular mayor of Dublin, were the forerunner of the local company of the Georgia National Guard. The guards trained in local fields and met in the grand room of the Leitch-Stubbs Building (present day (2016) location of Citi Trends,) on the southwest corner of the courthouse square.
The group was active during the Spanish American War and was reactivated in the early 1900s. Many young men joined the National Guard during the Mexican troubles in 1916. Many more joined in 1917 and 1918 during World War I.
In September 1919, the local company became Company A of the 121st Infantry, Georgia National Guard, a unit which is credited with being the first company of the modern National Guard in the Southeastern United States.
