ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY YEARS AGO TODAY
The Battle of Antietam, also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, was fought on September 17, 1862 during the American Civil War. The battle was the bloodiest single day in American military history, with over 23,000 casualties. The battle took place near Antietam Creek in Maryland.
The battle was fought between Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and Union General George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac. The battle marked the end of Lee's first invasion of the Northern states. The battle led President Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which declared freedom for all slaves in the rebellious states. PHOTOS BY SCOTT B. THOMPSON, SR.
