WHERE DID THESE GOATS COME FROM? - Today we have deputies and bailiffs. We have metal detectors. They are there to keep the courtroom free from violence. Many yesterdays ago, Laurens County had a different type of problem. The courthouse, which was built in 1845, was getting in bad shape. It needed a good coat of paint. Many windows were broken. The grand jury met in October of 1868. As a part of their usual duties, the grand jury made a presentment on the condition of the courthouse. It was their recommendation that some person in charge of the courthouse do a better job of keeping the courthouse closed when it was not in use. The courthouse was open day and night - wide open. The windows were left open at all times. The grand jury recommended that the last person out close the doors and lower the windows. They sought to prevent rain from coming into the courthouse and to prevent the building from becoming sleeping apartments for goats. Min. Bk. J, Sup. Ct., pp. 131, 171.
