THE ET CETERA CHRONICLES - HIGH POINTS IN LAURENS COUNTY

If you thought that all of the highest elevation points in Laurens County were in the northwestern part of the county you might want to reconsider.

On the east side of the Oconee River, the highest elevations are:

1,   412 feet - On a hill off Snellbridge Road between Alton Stewart Road and Stewart Mill Road.

2.   389 feet, at the intersection of Snell Bridge Road and Thomas Chapel Road.

3.  383 feet at the intersection of Snellbridge Road and Lovett Scott Road.

4.  386 feet - Intersection of Carter Road and Thomas Chapel Road  east of Scott.

5.   383 feet, about 1000 feet east of Scott on U.S. Highway 80.

6.  354 feet - about 400 yards north of Cullen Grove Church.

On the west side, the highest elevation (425 feet) is on the Laurens/Wilkinson County about halfway between where Pine Street and U.S. Highway 80 intersect and where Pine Street and the railroad intersect.

There are four points which are 4o5 feet above sea level.

They are a few hundred feet east of Old Macon Road about 2/10 of mile from the Wilkinson County line.

While most of the highest points are above the interstate.  Here are the average elevations as shown on U.S. Topographic maps.

Although the average elevation of the Oconee River remains fairly constant at 165 feet above sea level, the lowest spot in the county is the center of the Oconee River at the county line with Wheeler County.
