GEOGRAPHY


8) With 807.3 square miles of area, Laurens County is the 3rd  largest county in Georgia and second  in land area. 

9) Laurens County, with 278.3, has the highest mileage of state highways in Georgia along 10 state highways and four Federal highways.  1t's 1440.3 miles is the highest number of road mileage in the state for any county outside of the Metro Atlanta area.

10) According to the latest statistics, there are sixty people per square mile in Laurens County.

11) Laurens County's land area is two-thirds of that of the State of Rhode Island and one-third of Delaware.

12) Laurens County has more land area than the world's 12 smallest countries combined.

13) Dublin' longitude of  82.9183° W puts in a line with Columbus, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan, which are generally considered to be a part of the Midwest.

14) Dublin's latitude of 32.5375 puts it on a plane with the old world cities of  Nazareth, Shanghai and Tripoli.

15) Interstate Highway 16, officially designated as Georgia State Highway 404, is the first and only non-loop, non-bypass  intrastate interstate highway in Georgia.

GEOLOGY

19) The soil and the rocks of Laurens County were formed during the Cretaceous period ranging from 145 to 65 million years ago.

20) Fossils found in Dublin and Laurens County include the Cassidulus (Sea Urchin), Scutella (Sand Dollar) Glycemeris (clam) and Pecten Poulsoni (Scallop) proving that our county once lay beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

21) Along Highway 26 and across the southeastern quarter of the county are outcroppings of Alatmaha Grit Sandstone which were formed 23 to 34 million years ago.

22) Substantial earthquakes struck Laurens County in 1811-12 (New Madrid), November 1, 1875,  August 31, 1886 (Charleston) and October 22, 1912.

23) The "Sawyer Site" located at the end of Sportsmen's Club Road at the Oconee River is believed to be the oldest known Woodland Period Native American site in Georgia.



WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN

24) In the 1830s, the primary route of the Central of Georgia Railroad was somewhat direct line between Macon and Savannah bringing it through Laurens County.

25) In 1956, the Congress of the United States passed a measure to establish a B-52 bomber base northwest of Dublin at the Laurens County Airport.  The measure was vetoed by President Dwight Eisenhower.

26) In the late 1940s, Dublin was on the short list for the location of the United States Air Force Academy.
