Thomas "Tom" E. Watson was one of the most influential and powerful Populist leaders of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Although primarily a southern Democrat, Watson was the Vice-Presidential candidate on the Populist ticket with William Jennings Bryan in 1896. A writer, attorney, and newspaper editor, Watson served in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. Watson was behind the effort to establish Rural Free Delivery to the countrysides of America.
