A STORM ON 

HUNGER & HARDSHIP CREEK






The cicada symphony crescendoes.
Nimbus clouds roll in from the northwest.
Fireflies flitter in the dusk signaling the arrival of the menacing tempest.

Across the swamp, lighting transcends the fading rays of the setting sun.
Ole Mr. Raccoon skulks around after he awoke. 
He finds sanctuary in the hollow of a decaying water oak.

Darkness envelopes the beclouding sky.
Daddy-long-legs seek shelter under the poisonous vines.
Delightful zephyrs sway canopies of sweet magnolias and ancient pines.   

Bone-rattling lightning frolics with the sinister Satan.
Booming thunder bellows in a body-shaking tune.
Behind the clouds hides the waxing gibbous moon.

Drizzle drops trickle down from the golden walnut leaves.
Slowly at first, then in steady strands, 
Fat drops saturate the summer-scorched sands.

The tumult retreats to the south.
The diminishing echoes of the now-distant rumbling wane.
The web-footed bullfrogs croak once again.

The freshet quenches the Earth’s mighty thirst.
The creatures of Hunger and Hardship Creek settle down for the night.
The solemn slumber lasts ‘til the rosy dawn’s first light.
