SPECIAL AGENT BOBBY F. COATES (CENTER)  - EATING BREAKFAST WITH PRESIDENT RICHARD M.  NIXON, 1974


Bobby F. Coates was born in Laurens County, Georgia.  He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Coates, who moved to Macon, Georgia.  He was a graduate of Morehouse University and also attended Atlanta College.  Coates was appointed a special agent with the United States Secret Service in 1965.  He began his career in Detroit Michigan.  Over his career, Coates served Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan.  Agent Coates was present when an attempt to assassinate President Gerald Ford failed.  He was in the car.  When shots were fired, Coates immediately ran to protect Mrs. Ford, who fortunately was out of harm's range by the time he arrived.   Coates eventually became the Special Agent in charge of the Atlanta Office in the early 1980s.  He successfully arrested and prosecuted major counterfeiters in the district.
