Old timers reported that at certain times of the year, when the area's
Aquifers were full, and the water massively erupted so loudly that the
eruption sounded as if were thunder, hence the name of Laurens
County's most enduring places.
In the olden days, when medicine was nowhere near as advanced as it
is today, sick people looked around for old-timey cures. One of those
cures was to drink mineral water or soak their entire bodies in springs.
Such was the case with Thundering Springs in Northeastern Laurens
County. People swore that the springs helped mitigate the pain and
swelling from Rheumatic Fever. The sufferers came from miles around
“to plunge themselves into its boiling heart.” Sometimes the boiling was
so strong that the springs became forever changed and known as
“Thundering Springs.” Macon News, July 29, 1960.
