IMAGES OF OUR PAST - THE 12TH DISTRICT FAIRGROUNDS, TROUP ST., DUBLIN, GA 1916-1925

This massive complex was built in 1916 by counties of the 12th Congressional District of Georgia.  Located on Troup Street at the railroad and Telfair Street, the fairgrounds annually hosted fall fairs until it was destroyed by fire in 1925.  The New York Yankees played the Boston Braves here in the spring of 1918.   In 1933 and 1935, the St. Louis Cardinals played Oglethorpe University and the University of Georgia.  More than 10 baseball hall of fame members have participated in games on the ball field.  Shoeless Joe Jackson played here in 1925.   Cowboy legend Tom Mix performed here  in 1936.

From 1943 to 1946 the U.S. Army maintained a POW camp here for German and Italian prisoners, who helped fill the void in the local agricultural work force after many of the county's young men left for active duty military service.

It was the home of Dublin Garment Company, aka as "the shirt factory" for several decades.

Today the site has been completely cleared for future use.
